Are you an artist or a graphic designer? If so, you probably want to sell your art! The best way to do that is creating a dedicated website for your creative side.

There are a number of different ways to do this, and here we’ll outline how you should set up your portfolio website, step-by-step, to entice your customers to purchase digital and physical versions of your art.

1.  Use WordPress to customize your site.

When building your website, it’s vital that you make sure your website is exactly how you want it, no matter what you’re putting out there. We use Divi Builder for all of our customers’ sites, because it’s simply the most affordable option out there.

2.  Use plugins to automate the selling process.

Two of the most well-known ecommerce plugins are Shopify and WooCommerce, and for good reason. These services are optimized for selling both physical and digital products online, and automate the process by sending orders already paid for by the customer.

If your customers order a digital graphic or photo on your website, for instance, you’ll be notified of the purchase and enjoy no additional action on your part. On the other hand, if they order a watercolor canvas to be delivered for instance, you’ll have a certain amount of time to get it safely packaged and sent to the customer.

Oh, and the money’s already in your payment account (e.g., PayPal), so all you have to do is ship it!

3.  Separate your art into categories.

If you create physical and digital art, make sure that your customers can easily find the link to order from your website. If there’s too much information, your art could easily be lost and so will your potential sales!

The best way to do this is create a Portfolio, which is an option natively available in WordPress. Just like a blogger would create a Post, creatives can create a “portfolio” and post it to their site via the Portfolio Grid option in Divi Builder. As you add content to your site, your portfolio will update automatically.

4.  Use high-quality images and photos.

Nothing says “unprofessional” like low-quality images. These days, customers are used to high-quality images of their favorite products, and your art more than anything should be of the highest quality.

To add to this, make sure to offer various sizes of your digital images, and even different frame sizes for your customers. You might even consider adding different canvas options (e.g., a “relief” canvas, or a printed photo canvas that they can put on their living room wall).

6.  Offer custom artwork to your customers.

Using a contact form on your website is almost a no-brainer for your customers. When potential customers want to send you a message, give them the option of contacting you through an email form so that you can control the flow of work coming your way.

Keep in mind that once your website is up and running, don’t expect it to be flooded with visitors right away – however, if you constantly put out high-quality content and share it on social media, you’d be surprised how fast your website will increase its traffic.

7.  Don’t give up on your art.

It might seem discouraging at first if you don’t see a lot of traffic – trust us, everyone has that problem at the very beginning – but keep in mind that organic traffic is a slow process. As your website gains in popularity (it depends on you as the artist!), you’ll begin to see the fruits of your labor.

You should also consider posting your work to other websites to boost your own website’s credibility and traffic. Use social media sites such as Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as artistic sites like Etsy to sell your work.
